Govinda Ahuja married Sunita in a very hush-hush ceremony that took place in the presence of his close family members and their Guruji, on March 11, 1987. It was a love-cum-arranged marriage.
Sunita: Chi Chi’s maternal uncle is married to my elder sister. So it was natural for us to meet on and off. When I met him he was a struggling actor. I never thought he would become a renowned actor someday. Whenever he spoke about his aspirations of becoming an actor, we used to have a hearty laugh together.
Sunita: My fondest memory of our courtship days is that of the moment when Chi Chi had cleared his B.Com exams and he came to me with a Cadbury chocolate and said, ‘Mai pass ho gaya.’ I don’t know why, I bursted into laughter. He never believed, a girl from Bandra can fall in love with a Virar ka chhokra.
Sunita: Our wedding was kept a secret because his movie Ilzaam was released and he had become a star overnight. So he didn’t want his female fans to know that he is married, thinking that his fan following would go down. And there was no official honeymoon after the wedding though I used to and still tag along whenever he shoots abroad.
Sunita: Marriage is a big responsibility. You don’t just marry the man but his whole family. And Chi Chi has a very big family and they are very closely knitted. It was not difficult for me to fit in as both our families already knew each other. I enjoyed and loved being among them. I used to adore my mother-in-law and still admire her for the grit she had. She was quite a woman of substance.
Sunita: I knew Chi Chi can never be serious with any other woman, be it actresses or otherwise. He had flings here and there. I say, hero affair nahin karega to kaun karega. But all that are just speculations blown out of proportions. Chi Chi is a family man and can never do things that will cause harm to the family. He is emotional. He completely banks on me for everything. Today, 29 years later we have two anmol ratans and life has given us so much, I could have never asked for more. The word content would sum it all up.
